Balayage is a hand painted colouring technique that creates soft, blended lightness with a natural grow out. It is ideal if you want dimension and brightness without harsh lines, with colour placement tailored to your haircut, natural base, and how you actually wear your hair day to day. In our Grange Park, Northampton salon, balayage appointments are planned around hair condition first, so the finish looks polished now and stays wearable as it grows.

What your balayage service covers

Balayage is fully personalised, so your appointment is built around the look you want and what your hair can comfortably do.

  • A thorough consultation to agree placement, brightness, and upkeep
  • Sectioning and tailored lightening placement for a seamless blend
  • Careful timing and checking to protect the condition of your hair
  • Rinse, cleanse, and conditioning to keep hair feeling soft
  • Tonal refining if needed for the shade you want, toners are recommended on a per person basis and booked separately
  • A blow dry and finish so you can see the colour properly

Most balayage appointments take around 165 to 180 minutes, depending on hair length, thickness, and the level of lightness.

Who balayage suits best

Balayage is a great choice if you want softer highlights, a sun kissed look, or a more gradual change without committing to frequent root appointments. It works well if you prefer an easy grow out, or if you want a brighter face framing result while keeping depth through the rest of the hair. If your hair is very dark, previously coloured, or delicate, we will talk you through realistic options and the kindest route to your goal.

How the appointment works

We start with a consultation and plan the placement based on your natural base, previous colour, and your cut. The lightener is applied in a way that keeps the blend soft at the roots and brighter through the mid lengths and ends, then processed and checked carefully. If this is your first colour appointment, or you have not had colour for a while, you may need a quick patch test beforehand, it is a simple safety step.

Aftercare and maintenance

Balayage is designed to grow out gently, but the tone can shift over time depending on your hair and lifestyle. We will recommend a simple home care routine to protect shine and reduce brassiness, plus when it might be worth coming back for a toner refresh, gloss, or a trim to keep the ends looking healthy. If you like a very cool or very warm finish, you may need tonal top ups more often than the lightening itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is balayage and how is it different to highlights?
Balayage is painted on for a softer, more blended result, with less obvious regrowth. Traditional highlights often start closer to the root and can look more uniform. We can adjust either technique to suit how natural or bold you want the finish to be.
How long will balayage last?
Balayage is designed to grow out naturally, so it can stay looking good for longer than many highlight looks. The lightness tends to last, but the tone may need refreshing sooner depending on your hair and aftercare. We will suggest a maintenance plan that fits your routine.
Do I need a patch test for balayage?
If you are new to colour, have had a break from colouring, or have had any skin reactions before, a patch test may be required. It is quick and helps keep the service safe and comfortable. We will advise you when you book.
Can balayage cover grey hair?
Balayage can soften the look of grey by adding dimension, but it may not fully cover resistant greys on its own. If your priority is coverage, we may recommend combining balayage with a root colour or alternative approach. This will be discussed in your consultation.
How should I prepare for my balayage appointment?
Arrive with your hair in its usual condition, and bring a couple of inspiration photos that match your day to day style. Let us know about any previous colour, box dye, or chemical treatments, as this affects the plan. Avoid heavy oils on the scalp on the day, as they can affect application.
